So, Can I Install Solar Panels Myself?

If it's difficult for trained electrical professionals, then it’s going to be nearly impossible for the average homeowner to install their own solar panels. While there are several online resources (YouTube videos, Reddit threads and other “how to” discussions) on DIY solar panel installation, we strongly urge you to never follow this advice. 

As a reminder, it is illegal in Florida for anyone other than a licensed electrician to install solar panels. It is highly dangerous for an untrained person to install solar panels – as they can seriously injure themselves, or others in the process. Also, it’s very likely that you’ll cause extensive damage to your home, and end up spending more on repairs than you would have on an initial installation. So, if you’re looking to install solar panels for your home or commercial property, always go to a licensed electrician for installation. 

While Homeowners Can’t Install Solar Panels, They Can Participate in the Process

Just like any other home installation project, homeowner input is necessary to complete a successful project. Each home has a unique set of features, and thus, presents a specific set of circumstances during the installation process.

Professional solar panel installers should maintain direct and clear communication with their clients from start to finish. Clients should not only be informed about the process itself but should be notified about the progress of an installation.

Contractors should also work to ensure that the client’s needs are being met. While many of the decisions surrounding installation will be based on physical factors (e.g. roof type, orientation, shading,) contractors should discuss the following with homeowners: 

• The homeowner’s goals with solar panel installation
• The homeowner’s current (and future) energy needs
• Aesthetic preferences (when applicable) 
• The homeowner’s budget for solar panel installation
• Future maintenance following installation
