Can Florida Homeowners Install Their Own Solar Panels?
As more Florida homeowners look to solar power as a potential source of electrical energy, it’s only natural for questions about the installation process to arise. Especially, when they’re looking to make a sizable financial investment. Homeowners looking to install panels may be wondering what the process looks like – and if they can cut costs with a DIY approach to solar panel installation.
So, Can I Install Solar Panels Myself?
Well, no. According to Florida law, the panels themselves must be installed by a state-licensed master electrician, electrical contractor or solar contractor. While it’s not required by federal law, many states require a licensed contractor to install solar panels – and for good reason.
To install a solar panel, you must know how to properly connect the wires that convert solar energy into electricity. A trained professional is needed, as these panels can generate hundreds of volts of electricity. Not only is there a risk of electrocution, but fires can result from faulty wiring or the placement of panels near combustible gases.
Solar Panels Are Especially Difficult – Even for Trained Electricians
Solar panels are particularly difficult, even for trained professionals. While licensed electricians can perform solar installations in the state of Florida, it can be very difficult:
- Specific knowledge surrounding solar panel installation is required
- Electricians must adhere to specific building and electrical codes
- Certain permits must be attained when performing solar panel installations
- Solar panel installation is very physically demanding (as it requires lots of lifting and working on roofs)
- Special work gear is required to work safely on residential and commercial roofs
If it's difficult for trained electrical professionals, then it’s going to be nearly impossible for the average homeowner to install their own solar panels. While there are several online resources (YouTube videos, Reddit threads and other “how to” discussions) on DIY solar panel installation, we strongly urge you to never follow this advice.
As a reminder, it is illegal in Florida for anyone other than a licensed electrician to install solar panels. It is highly dangerous for an untrained person to install solar panels – as they can seriously injure themselves, or others in the process. Also, it’s very likely that you’ll cause extensive damage to your home, and end up spending more on repairs than you would have on an initial installation. So, if you’re looking to install solar panels for your home or commercial property, always go to a licensed electrician for installation.
While Homeowners Can’t Install Solar Panels, They Can Participate in the Process
Just like any other home installation project, homeowner input is necessary to complete a successful project. Each home has a unique set of features, and thus, presents a specific set of circumstances during the installation process.
Professional solar panel installers should maintain direct and clear communication with their clients from start to finish. Clients should not only be informed about the process itself but should be notified about the progress of an installation.
Contractors should also work to ensure that the client’s needs are being met. While many of the decisions surrounding installation will be based on physical factors (e.g. roof type, orientation, shading,) contractors should discuss the following with homeowners:
- The homeowner’s goals with solar panel installation
- The homeowner’s current (and future) energy needs
- Aesthetic preferences (when applicable)
- The homeowner’s budget for solar panel installation
- Future maintenance following installation
